Christmas is Coming November 23 2022, 0 Comments

Gearing up for the holidays can be both the most wonderful time of the year and the most stressful. Right now I'm actually sitting in bed with my kids on a cold, blustery day. I'm actually making a "Christmas To Do List". (to be continued...)

A New Year and a Wonderful Family January 16 2021, 0 Comments

So much to be thankful for in 2021: We're so grateful for all of our wonderful customers and friends, near and far that have supported us this past rocky year and encourage us to "keep on keepin' on". In light of so much unknown, we hope to continue to spread joy and happiness through beauty and nature.
Our newest location at historic Plant Riverside has been such a wonderful addition to our company and has allowed us to curate a beautiful range of apothecary lines that we feel ....

"America, America..." November 05 2020, 2 Comments

"...God shed His grace on thee; and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea." That's my prayer right now.

As of today the country is still seemingly "on pause". But there is a great war being fought in the heavenlies over the future of this beautiful land.

I am thankful for my freedoms as a woman, a small business owner, a wife, a mother and a Christian. Where else in the world would I be allowed and encouraged to do all and be all of these things?

It is very true that we will never really know what we have/had until it is gone. So many fight for a cause based on their feelings and yet truth seems to hold no bearing. With rights come great responsibility.

I am tired and I need to process my ideas on this a little more. Not sure who may really read the thoughts and meanderings of simple floral designer here in Savannah, but I do hope we all take time to pray for our country and for her people. Pray for the truth to prevail, for lives to be saved and lived, for righteousness and justice for all. May we be worthy of this great country.

Exciting News from Urban Poppy July 15 2020, 1 Comment

Wowzers. How is it already the middle of July? Is it me or have the months both dragged on and then crazily sped up once we hit the end of May?

June 1st, after being closed by mandate March 28th, for a little over two months, we opened our doors to you, our wonderful customers. By God's grace (literally) we managed to keep the store going with phone and online orders and we converted our shop back into a production studio which is what we started as, ten years ago.

Many of you know that Savannah's busiest wedding seasons are in the spring and fall. Our wedding work (which comprises over half of our business) dried up left and right and we lamented with our brides and their families over the loss they went (and still are going) through having to reschedule or cancel their plans in a continued time of unknown.

Several of you who came in after we first reopened last month were thrilled we had "made it through" and we small businesses have been holding our breath while saying prayers for each other that we can continue to do so.

And here is the biggest kicker of all.... after several years of waiting, with delay after delay, we (again, God-willing) hope to open Urban Poppy Plant Riverside in the next couple of weeks. Many folks think we are crazy, and perhaps we are (who isn't just a little bit crazy right now?), but since the ship had sailed and we all jumped aboard with it, we just pray the earth is really round and not flat and that life turns back around :)

And how are *YOU* all doing? We miss you; we think of you and hope you and your loved ones are well: physically, emotionally, spiritually and socially. We are here for you and can't wait to keep sharing beauty and nature with you in this season, and the seasons to come. Blessings, peace and love to you all.

Mother's Day, Sunday, May, 10th May 02 2020, 0 Comments

This year will mark an unusual Mother's Day in perhaps the history of the holiday. Many of us who would normally spend this day with our moms or important mother figures, are having to do so virtually. I am a huggy kind of person and I know that flowers can never replace the sense of touch, but because of their beauty and the life-giving hope they represent, they can lift the spirits and send the love we know you would like to give in person.

Next week at Urban Poppy, we will be busy getting beautiful blooms, plants and other gifts prepared for your loved ones. Please feel free to call us at 912.429.3298 to preorder as our flowers are limited. Or you can order directly online at urbanpoppy.com. Visit our website to see all the loveliness we have in store for Mom.

Covid-19 and Urban Poppy May 02 2020, 0 Comments

Where to really begin? I've been procrastinating writing any type of "letter" because everything about this present global pandemic situation still seems so surreal. It's especially hard to digest when everything here in balmy Savannah is blooming, breezy and warm with sunny weather beckoning everyone outside where Nature is happy.

Birds are singing their sweet little heads off, azaleas are exploding in color and overnight the tiniest of celery green leaves are appearing on our crepe myrtles, fig trees and grape vines. Our chickens are laying and rolling around in the dust sunning themselves, our garden is growing, life is sweet and yet it's the UNKNOWN; that palpable feeling of weird dread- like waiting for test results.

We're not alone though. We're separated but we can all still look out for one another.  Many of our little shops and services are holding our breaths to see what will happen. We love our community, we love our families and customers and we are going through something amazing in history right now. Spring was on March 19th and from the death of  sleeping winter, there is new life.

Please plant a garden if you can. Sun-soak in the vitamin D and take lots of vitamin C. Give yourselves permission to rest. Our kids are home now so that means more bike rides, more walks, more books to read to them and more time to reflect. Peace and safety to each of you and look up for a flowering branch to adorn your table, look down for spring bloom to pluck and give to a sweet one.  Hang in there you lovely people :)

A Spring Breeze Blowing in Change February 25 2020, 0 Comments

Sleeping next to me is my little Sabine. She snuck in bed with me a few moments ago. A lot is going on as I type this. The seriousness of the coronavirus pandemic has a lot of people and nations on edge and it's hard for people to retain focus on the daily, mundane things, understandably. Many people are fearful to travel and there is pending economic duress in the air.

So what will you do? How will you act? How will you respond? I'm convicted by the reality that I need to slow down and be more patient and hopeful rather than give in to angst and the stress I am hearing in others' voices.

Be prepared yes, but please enjoy the good all around us- the joy of new lives coming together in matrimony, the simplicity and beauty of spring in bloom. A little one snoring beside you. These are the good days, the small, quiet things and it is what our memories should guard in our hearts.

Sweet dreams- A

Getting Ready for the New Year + Valentine's Day January 19 2020, 0 Comments

2020 is not even three weeks in but it's less than a month until Valentine's Day and we are getting busy like red, heart-shaped elves gearing up for what happens to be one of the busiest days and likely week of the year for florists.
.
The excitement of finding fresh new flowers and designs invigorates us as creatives and there is simply not enough time in the year to get everything done. In anticipation of the event, we will be traveling down to Ecuador this week to visit some of our flower farms and meet our flower friends firsthand.
.
This year is especially exciting as we prepare for the spring opening of our second Urban Poppy shop on historic River Street as part of the highly awaited opening of Plant Riverside. These two events seem to be happening neck and neck and I think we are all holding our breath until both happen.
.

Stay tuned when we return with stories of our trip and photos of what you can expect for this year's Day of Love.

Gardening and the Greenhouse September 17 2019, 0 Comments

A couple of weeks ago, I was thrilled to become the owner of a snow peacock plant or Calathea White Fusion. I bought it from a shop on Etsy and it came beautifully and safely packaged and I felt like I adopted a new kitten. (This photo is actually a variegated rubber plant which looks white similar to my little one- so cool that I'm actually hoping to order one soon).

She (it's a she for some reason) is currently at home in my sun room although I'm chomping at the bit to see how she likes the greenhouse that is near completion in our backyard.

I had the honor of giving what I believe was my first garden talk (rather than flower talk) to an amazing group of women (and one gentleman) enjoying Savannah and our beautiful garden city.

Since these lovely folks were from all over the country, the question I sought to frame when speaking about their garden, in particular designing new spaces was what would its purpose/function be?

We all have a purpose and I think it's perhaps one of THE most freeing things to come into that purpose- irregardless of age or stage in life.

But I digress; I'm in bed about to wind down and thoughts of little plants, dirt, transplanting and micro greens dance through my head.

Until next time, may you enjoy the beauty and nature all around you.

The Time Continues to Fly September 09 2019, 0 Comments

What an exciting collection of years this has been. When I think that we are a few months away from our tenth year at Urban Poppy, I can only marvel at where we have been and where we are going. I think of of the thousands of consults we have had, the hundreds of weddings, thousands of bouquets and boutonnieres we have created and I wonder at the lives of the couples we have played a small, beautiful part in.

How are they now? How much laughter has been shared? How many tears have been shed? How many little children have come into this world as a testimony of their love? I'm thinking of this particularly now because one of my sweet brides has returned to the South (this is actually her bridal bouquet from 2012) and would love to more about floral design. What an honor it would be to work directly with one of my brides from time past.

On Being Mom May 03 2019, 0 Comments

I am an older mother, blessed with babes at age 42 and then again at 45. Sebastian and Sabine, both named after Italian martyrs; especially fascinating as I am not Catholic but they seemed to resonate with both saints. In my early twenties I, like many women my age contemplated having children but as my years climbed higher and I approached my late thirties, I was resigned to being that cool gypsy, artistic aunt that lived all of the world and spoke different languages. Returning from a year abroad teaching in S. Korea I announced to my bewildered parents I wanted to start a band and do something with flowers. And then Maui and Russell came along, with a return to S. Korea, Bali, marriage at the US Embassy in Seoul, Tokyo for his birthday and thoughts of returning to the States. Urban Poppy was born and then the miracle of two children (with two more little miracles I believe wait for us in heaven) came several years later. I was a mother (to be continued...)
